Big Canoe is easily accessible from Georgia highway 400. The area is made up of five communities:
The area offers 27 holes of golf, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor tennis and various cultural events.
The Clubhouse at Lake Sconti features the Mountain Grille and Black Bear Pub. The club is located on the ninth hole of the Creek Course with spectacular lake and mountain views. The Mountain Grille offers find dining while the pub is the place to enjoy drinks while reliving that last round of golf.
The Wild Onion Grille, located in the Choctaw Village, is the place for pizza and sandwiches.
Three restaurants are located outside of the Big Canoe gate including 61 Main and the Carriage House Coffee Shop in Jasper and Fuego Mexican Grill and Tequila Bar in Marble Hill. The Woodbridge Inn and Restaurant in Jasper is also popular with Big Canoe residents.
The pro shop at the golf courses offers clothes and sporting equipment for men women. Other stores and boutiques are found in neighboring Jasper.
Big Canoe was designed for people who love the outdoors. Resident golfers enjoy the 27 holes of golf available on three courses. The Choctaw, Cherokee and Creek courses offer different challenges. This is mountain golf with creeks, streams and waterfalls adding to the beauty.
Tennis is available with two indoor and eight outdoors courts. Big Canoe has two public swimming pools including the Disharoon Swim Club. The club also has a beach on the lake with canoes and paddle boats available for members. This is the major swimming lake with a popular rockslide. A public swimming pool is also available in the Wildcat subdivision.
Lake Petit with 111 acres is the largest of the Big Canoe lakes with a marina and boat launch available. This is a boating lake stocked with rainbow trout. Electric motor and non-motorized watercraft are allowed on the lake but there is no swimming. Electric powered pontoon boats, fishing tackle and bait can be rented at the marina.
Swimming is not allowed in Lake Sconti but fishing is permitted. This lake is also stocked with trout.
Thirty percent of the 8,000 acres that make up Big Canoe is reserved green space. This includes several hiking trails such as the ten miles of trails winding through Wildcat. These paved trails connect hikers and bikers with meadows, picnic grounds and trout streams at the Wildcat Recreation area and McDaniel Meadows.
Homes in Big Canoe include cottages priced from $185,000 to large estates in the two-million dollar range. Choctaw's "village in the woods" has 103 homes in the $300,000 range while Hi Gap V on McElroy mountain has estates on acreage. The Bluffs at Ridgeview has mountain homes at 2,200 feet elevation in the $200,000 and up range.
Building lots are available from $80,000 to $300,000 in the different communities. Big Canoe has a homeowners association with codes, covenants and restrictions to maintain the natural beauty of the area.
Homes are EarthCraft certified meaning they make use of environmentally friendly materials. Wood and stone are used extensively. The architectural style is mainly Appalachian mountain home in addition to modern craftsman, rustic log and timber designs. Many of the homes are three-bedroom, two-bath mountain cabin style with 2,200 or more square feet.
The homes are all on wooded lots with pine, oak, hickory, dogwood and laurel providing natural landscaping. The communities are surrounded by the golf courses or strands of hardwood forest.
Big Canoe has a Public Safety Department that includes firefighters and an emergency medical vehicle available at all times. The emergency response team includes paid staff members and community volunteers. Big Canoe is patrolled by a security service 24/7. Piedmont Healthcare and the Mountainside Hospital are located in nearby Jasper.
Residents of the area often drive all-wheel drive vehicles. Roads in Big Canoe are paved but the area can get the occasional snow storm and chains or snow tires may be advised.
